Happy Saturday, Grace Vineyard Family and Friends.

It’s time for another Weekly Update to connect with you and tell you a little about what’s coming up in our Grace Vineyard family.

First, a big thanks to Matt Evans for bringing the message last Sunday.  Our son Bryce got married on May 28, so I asked Matt if he would bring the message, and boy, did he deliver.  Great word!  Here it is on our Gracetalks.org podcast as well as our YouTube Channel

AWE-doration

how awe-filled adoration shapes our prayer life

On Sunday I’ll be back teaching/preaching and I’m going to bring the 3rd message in our current series on prayer.  I’m calling this one “AWE-DORATION – how awe-filled adoration shapes our prayer life”.  St. Augustine proclaimed  “You are what you love,” teaching the profound truth that our deepest desires and loves shape our character, influence our actions, and ultimately define our spiritual journey. (see https://christian.net/theology-and-spirituality/augustine-you-are-what-you-love/).  I’ve been referencing a book by Tim Keller on prayer , and was very interested to hear what he would say on one of my favorite topics – worship – and it’s role in prayer.  That’s where I learned this quote from St. Augustine, and Keller’s reworking of it as “you are what you adore”.  I think it’s worth sharing with you an excerpt from Keller. Reflecting on Augustine’s works and another author’s similar reflections (James K.A. Smith, Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation), Keller writes,

“…to change people most profoundly, we must change what we worship. Thinking, arguments, and beliefs are crucial as means of moving the heart, but ultimately we are what we adore. We are what captures our imagination, what leads us to praise and to compel others to praise it. Our inordinate anger, anxiety, and discouragement result from disordered loves. Our relational problems result from disordered loves, and our social and cultural problems as well. What can re-engineer our very inner being, the structure of our personality? What can create healthy human community? Worship and adoration of God. We must love God supremely, and that can be cultivated only through praise and adoration.”

I think Tim Keller got it right.  We can cultivate gratitude, reverence, and awe for God that overflows into thanksgiving, praise, and adoration, and doing so changes us fundamentally.  And that in turn shapes how we approach God in our prayer lives.  That’s what I’ll be exploring with you on Sunday morning. I hope you can join us tomorrow in person at 102 N Freeman Street at 9:30 am, but if you can’t be there, here’s the info you need to join us online: join us online on Zoom with this link Zoom Meeting ID  153 112 432, Passcode 684814 and you can also find our livestream on Facebook Live at facebook.com/gracevcf.

Next Saturday is the 2nd Saturday of the month, and that means it’s time for our monthly Ladies’ walk and Men’s Breakfast:

Ladies Harbor Walk Saturday, June 13th 9am

Ladies, you’ll meet at the Parking Lot 1 Tunnel across from Joe’s Crab Shack: 401 Riverside Dr, Oceanside. Please let Kathy Green know if you plan to attend 1 760-583-1779

Men’s Breakfast Saturday June 13, 2026 with Chaplain Jason DiPinto

I think you all know the drill by now.  We meet on the terrace at the back of the church at 8am on Saturday morning.  Matt and Craig will be firing up the Blackstone and putting on a great breakfast with LOTS of bacon, and whatever breakfast food caught their attention.  Sometimes it’s French Toast and scrambled eggs and home fried potatoes.  Sometimes it’s the best breakfast burritos you can get your hands on.  Whatever they choose, it’s always great.  Following breakfast we’ll worship the Lord together with a few worship songs, and, and then our own Navy Chaplain Jason DiPinto will be bringing the message.

Prayer After Church June 14

You’ll probably also all remember that usually after the 2nd Saturday of the month comes the 2nd Sunday of the month, and that means it’s time for 2nd Sunday after church prayer.  Since we’ve been learning about prayer in our Sunday morning services, this is a really great opportunity to put into practice what we’ve been learning.  I hope you’ll join us!  Remember, we’re challenging all of you to come to at least 1 Sunday prayer meeting in 2026. You have 12 opportunities.  Maybe this is your week?  Why not make it so?!

Ladies One Day Conference Saturday, September 26th 9am-5pm

This is another announcement for just the ladies: You’re invited to join us at the Vineyard Yorba Linda’s Standing Firm one day conference.  Anita Ruis, David Ruis’s wife, will be the speaker.  We’ll meet at the church to carpool at 7:30am and leave at 7:45.  Cost is $40 and includes breakfast and lunch.  Here’s the link to register:https://vineyardyorbalinda.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/3598139  Kim told me she’s going, so you know it’s going to be good!   I’ve heard nothing but great things about Anita Ruis. She and her husband David are the national directors of the Vineyard Canada, and they have a very rich history in the body of Christ.  I hope you all will take advantage of this great opportunity.

God bless you each abundantly!

with love,

Ron Ohst
