Hello Grace Vineyard and Friends!

Welcome to Autumn.  Once again I’m writing to you from a hotel room.  Last week we were helping our daughter Charissa get settled into her new home in the undergraduate apartments at UC Santa Barbara where she is transferring as a Junior in her journey toward becoming a High School English teacher.  Since my email last week, classes have started and she is getting acclimated to her new life with new friends, a fast-paced university schedule, finding the dining halls (very important!), looking for a church family, etc. I love being part of a worshiping community with you, where the pastor can share details like this, knowing you care and are supporting our family with your prayers. As we’ve been sharing recently on the topic “Better Together” I’d encourage us all the more to share the details of our lives with each other, encouraging and praying for one another in this world that seems to push us toward isolation.  Anyway, today I’m in a hotel room in Palm Desert where we will join with 300+ other couples from churches in San Diego for the Marriage Getaway.  There are 8 couples signed up from Grace Vineyard!  Please support this Marriage Getaway in your prayers this weekend; it just might be the change factor that saves some couples whose marriages are on the brink of shipwreck.  We’ll be back with you refreshed and raring to go next weekend.

This weekend we have a special treat in store for Sunday Morning.

At a recent Men’s Breakfast, Brian Sliffe shared with us some thoughts about how to practically walk out the message of Grace that we had been diving into on Sunday mornings.  If Jesus + Nothing = Everything, what does that mean for how I live out the life of Grace?  Do I do nothing, just sort of floating along in the river of God’s Grace? Well, no, that’s not how it’s done.  As Dallas Willard has wisely put it, “Grace is not opposed to effort; Grace is opposed to earning.” Yes, we enter into right standing with God through His Grace by faith in Jesus, plus nothing. But now that we are living in that relationship, we have a role to play.  Brian did such a great job at that Men’s breakfast that I asked him if he’d be willing to share that talk with the whole church some time and he said yes.  That time is this Sunday morning!

Here are a couple more things that I want to remind you of:

Serving at Bread of Life Next Friday

On the first Friday of every month, Grace Vineyard serves a the Bread of Life Rescue Mission. We need volunteers to show up at 1919 Apple Street in Oceanside at 5pm on Friday, October 1. We’ll serve our neighbors a hot dinner, welcome and pray for those with needs, and help clean up after dinner. You’ll be done somewhere near 6:30. We also need donations – it costs about $80 to provide a complete meal for all our guests. Call or Text Nancy Beck at 760-696-2078 for more info. Nancy will also be in the lobby this Sunday after church to answer all your questions and get you signed up to help.

Two New Women’s Bible Studies

For the Women of Grace, we are excited to launch 2 new Bible Studies.  PLEASE NOTE – this Sunday (9/26) is the last day to sign up for both the Monday Night and the Saturday Morning studies.  If you can’t be in church this Sunday to sign up – send in your payment in the payment link below, AND contact Kim Ohst at 760-519-4558 or kimohst@gmail.com to let her know which Study you are signing up for (she needs to order books for you, so this Sunday is the deadline to let her know).

The first is a Monday Night Bible Study meeting on Zoom. Beginning Monday, October 4th, we’ll be going through Bible Studies for Life: Answers to Tough Questions.   We’ll have prayer at 6:30 and the study will begin at 7pm.   This study will help us as followers of Christ carefully consider what we believe, especially looking at the scriptures for truth and understanding. Cost for this 6 week study is $15.  Please sign up and pay by Sunday, September 26th. Here’s a link to pay women’s study payment . In the place where you can leave a note about your payment, please note that it’s for the women’s Monday study.   If you have any questions, please call Robin Spillman 760.583.3677.

The second one will be on Saturday Mornings from 10-11am beginning on October 2nd.  We’ll go through “When God Shows Up” by StoryTellers Live via Zoom.    In this study, we’ll listen to a podcast of a woman’s story and explore God’s truth in her story through a workbook with questions and scripture.  The cost of the study is $20.  Please sign up by Sunday, September 26th.   If you have any questions, please call Kim Ohst 760.519.4558.

For either of these new studies you can either bring the payment to the sign up table on Sunday morning at church, or you can click on the following button for our online payment system:

New Baseboard Install Starts Friday

That nasty old green carpet is now a distant memory. I so love walking into the lobby and seeing our beautiful flooring, especially knowing it goes all the way onto the terrace and we’ll never have to worry about cleaning up another coffee stain! But I also think “I can’t wait until we get baseboard installed,” cuz it still looks a little like a construction zone to me.  Well, the baseboard install should start next Friday, October 1st!   The next phase in the flooring project will be replacing the carpet down the aisles and in front of the stage.  As I’m sure you realize, each one of these “little” projects in a building our size can cost thousands of dollars, so we are still receiving donations for the building fund as we keep moving forward. If you’d like to contribute, just mention “Building Fund” in the notes if you are using online giving (see the donate button at the end of this email), or on the envelope, or check memo if you are giving in person.

Join Us For Sunday Nights At Grace

Finally, we hope you’ll all check out our new Sunday Night Gathering!  We start at 6pm every Sunday Night and it has been a beautiful time week after week as we experience the rich presence of the Lord in intimate worship, and are being empowered in the Word together. This week the Sunday Night team will continue their study in Luke and Acts.  If you’d like to know more about it, or find out how you can serve, please contact Steve at 760-500-4324 or srogers@gracevcf.org.

That’s all for now.  See you soon!

Blessings and love to each of you,

Ron Ohst
