Hello Grace Vineyard and Friends!

Welcome to the first week of Summer.  Hopefully that sentence made you smile like I did as soon as I typed it. 🙂  This is the beginning of my 40th summer living in North County (I’ve lived in only 2 cities – Vista, and Oceanside – since 1982), and I gotta say, I love it here.  I hope you do too.  We’re just finishing another wonderful week. I loved Father’s Day, last Sunday, and the worship night we experienced last night was even better than I had hoped.  And Steve and Lisa are back from Honduras.  What a great life.

Here’s what’s coming up in our Grace Vineyard Community:

This Sunday – The Dynamic Experience of the Holy Spirit

This week we’re back in our Galatians study and we get to Chapter 3 where Paul mentions almost in passing what he can assume everyone in the churches he has planted would just know as part of their life experience — that a dynamic experience of the Holy Spirit was a normal and central part of every individual Christian life and every Christian Community.  Just look at some of the things he says about life in the Spirit as he is reminding them that we live our life by faith, not by works:

Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? — Galatians 3:3

Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? — Galatians 3:5

And note how Paul sees the promise of Abraham’s faith fulfilled by the experience of the Holy Spirit in the lives of these new Gentile believers:

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. –Galatians 3:14

I feel that this week we should take a deeper look at the centrality of the experience of the Holy Spirit in in the lives of Jesus’ followers and His Church, so that’s what we’re going to do on Sunday.  I plan on reading Galatians 2:19-3:14 with you, so you might prepare your hearts and minds by taking a look at that passage before Sunday morning.

A book I’d like you to have

I found a really readable commentary on Galatians that I think would benefit you.  The book is out of print right now, but I just happen to know the author and he sent me 30 copies.  We’re asking for a $5 donation, and we’ll have them in the back of the church this Sunday.  Some of you will remember the author, Gary Kinnaman, cuz he’s spoken at our church a couple times in the past.  If you pick up a copy of the book, you’ll recognize some of the ideas we’ve been talking about during this Galatians study, especially the idea that Grace=faith in Jesus + nothing.

Bread of Life Next Friday

It’s time for Grace Vineyard to serve our neighbors at Bread of Life Rescue Mission.  We have a new Bread of Life coordinator starting in July.  We want to thank Venita Ibarra for years of serving in this ministry.  Venita has just graduated and has started her new career. Congratulations, Venita!  With this new adventure, Venita has passed the baton to one of our faithful Bread of Life volunteers, Nancy Beck, and Nancy couldn’t be more excited!  We need volunteers to show up at 1919 Apple Street in Oceanside at 5pm on Friday, July 2nd.   You’ll serve our neighbors a hot dinner, welcome and pray for those with needs, and help clean up after dinner.  You’ll be done somewhere near 6:30.  We also need donations – it costs about $80 to provide a complete meal for all our guests.  Nancy will be in the lobby this Sunday after church to answer all your questions and get you signed up to help.

Ladies Purse Sewing Event

Ladies, we have a great day planned for enjoying some sweet fellowship while we work on an important project together.

On Saturday, July 17th, from 9am to 1pm we are going to meet at Treina’s home (936 Sierra Court, Vista) to sew purses.  We will be filling the purses with sanitary products and sending them along to girls in Zambia, Africa, along with cards that we will also be making.  One of the effects of extreme poverty is that girls without access to sanitary products often miss school and lose their jobs.  Our simple act of love will make a positive change in the life of every girl who receives one of our purses.  Please join us!  If you’d like more information, please contact Kim Ohst at 760-519-4558, or kimohst@gmail.com

Sunday Night Prayer for Upcoming Sunday Night Service

In just a few weeks we are planning on launching a Sunday night service.  Please join us this Sunday night, June 27, at 6PM for a prayer meeting – we are seeking the Lord for His direction and blessing.  For more info, contact Steve Rogers at 760-500-4324 or srogers@gracevcf.org.

And that’s it for this week’s update.  See you Sunday Morning!

With love and blessings,

Ron Ohst
