January 26, 2024

Hello Grace Vineyard and friends of Grace,

I was having breakfast with a friend this morning and he said something like, “days go slowly, but weeks go quickly.”  That sounds about right to me.  This weekend is already the last weekend in January!   For one thing, that means that the Homeless Outreach/Shower Ministry that we’ve been talking about is already here.  “Here”, as in tomorrow morning!  You can’t tell from the flier I have just below this, but Saturday, January 27th, is the day this outreach is being launched, so this is a big deal for all of us.  Here are some details you’ll want to know:

Homeless Outreach/Shower Ministry

During this month of focus on Missions, we are talking about opportunities to join Jesus in His mission to redeem our world.  We have a great one right in our own backyard starting this weekend.  Convicted for Christ has partnered with Humanity Showers to put on a new outreach starting Saturday, January 27th, and continuing after that on the last Saturday of every month.  Humanity Showers provides mobile showers and so much more to serve basic needs of unsheltered people in our community. I want to suggest you check out the Humanity Showers website at https://www.humanityshowers.org/ Their founder, Jordan Verdin, has a remarkable story and has created a remarkable organization.  You’ll want to read the STORIES section of their website which has beautiful photos of local homeless people, and when you click on each photo you’ll get their personal story. The Homeless/Shower Ministry will run from 7:45am to 11am on the last Saturday of every month.  Here’s some bullet points you’ll want to know:

  • Set up starts at 7am if you want to be part of the set up crew.
  • All volunteers, intake, safety talk, assignments, and prayer at 7:45 AM
  • Showers and food to start at 8 AM.
  • Cleanup and breakdown starts at 10:30 AM.
  • Final breakdown, cleanup, and end of service 11 AM.
  • Volunteer opportunities to Serve will be at:
  1. Hygiene, shampoo, soap, and towel distribution table.
  2. Clothing, intake, and distribution tables.
  3. Food prep, and distribution both.
  4. Shower trailer. Task will include intaking information for clients to take a shower/maintaining the list. Cleaning showers in between each shower and monitoring time management for each shower.
  5. Additional volunteers always welcome to help pray for, cleanup, pick up trash, serve, love on, all other volunteers and Homeless clients as a Romer/fill in a needed spot as needed.

The address is; 212 N Clementine Oceanside CA 92054 Park anywhere on the street and walk to the site. All volunteers requested to be there no later than 7:45 AM to get mandatory safety talk as well as the assignments for the day.

I really hope a bunch of us from Grace Vineyard will jump on this opportunity to join Jesus in His mission!

This weekend also brings the final Sunday of our “Jesus says ‘Go!'” series.

We have had excellent speakers this month!  I really enjoyed Duke and Marie Lancaster last Sunday.  Here’s the video of their message in case you missed or wanted to to hear it again or wanted to share it with somebody:

This Sunday we have our final guest speakers.  It’s a couple of missionaries with years of experience in closed countries.  Their going to share some of their unique experiences with us, and they’re going to give us some practical training for how we can engage people who come from completely non-Christian cultures.  I think you’ll find this Sunday very interesting and very practical for our life on Mission with God.

Normally at this point in my email, I would tell you that you can join us on Facebook Live if you are not able to be with us in person, but due to security concerns, we won’t be able to broadcast this service on the internet.  We’ll still have Zoom available, so if you can’t be with us, you can join us on Zoom, but you’ll have to be sure to reveal your name when you join the zoom meeting.  So if your default zoom meeting is something like iphone-27, please change it to your actual name when you join the meeting.  Here’s the info you need to join:  Zoom Meeting ID  153 112 432, Passcode 684814.  You should be able to just click or tap on that link to launch zoom. You can also type in the Meeting ID and Passcode when you launch the zoom app on your device.  If you’ve never done this before, you might want to make sure you have the latest version of the zoom app already installed on your device before Sunday arrives!

2024 Missions Pledges

As we bring our Missions Month to an end, I want to remind you that it’s time for us to renew our Missions Pledges. Funding for our missions program comes from people like you and me giving special offerings for Missions, above and beyond our normal tithes.  Every January, we fill out pledge cards with the amount we plan on giving  to missions every month for the next year. Our Missions team then takes those pledges and commits to our missionaries for their support for the coming year.  So, please renew your pledge for 2024 by clicking here: gracevcf.org/pledge24.  If you prefer to fill out this form with paper and pen, you can pick up a brochure when you come into the building on Sundays.  Just drop it off in the offering when you have finished it.  Please Note: if you’ve been a regular missions giver last year, we don’t assume anything about this year.  That is to say, we don’t assume that you will automatically continue giving what you gave last year, so please, EVERYBODY, fill out a new pledge form so we can create our missions budget for the coming year.  Thank you!

International Potluck

This Sunday after church we are having our International Potluck as a special way to connect.  If you didn’t sign up to bring something yet, just bring your favorite (hopefully international) dish! The potluck will take place right after church, and will be lots of fun.  If you’re able, please find Steve Rogers and offer to help with the cleanup after the potluck is over — many hands make light work!

Healing From the Inside Out

We are launching a new session of Healing from the Inside Out for women only, beginning Tuesday, February 6th at the church in the kids area at 7pm.  The goal of this group is to bring healing to the emotional pain that tends to drive our negative life choices.  It provides the opportunity to bring hurtful memories into the light and teaches tools needed to live an emotionally healthy life.  Group time consists of teaching and group processing. There is also some journaling homework.  Cost is $15 and includes a workbook.  Please contact Kim Ohst for more information 760.519.4558.  There will be a sign up in the church lobby.

Collecting Women’s Business-Casual Clothing

On Sundays we have a labelled bin in the lobby to collect women’s nice, business casual clothing.  We plan to do an outreach at a later date with these clothing items. Please call Kim Ohst at 760.519.4558 for more details.

Superbowl Party February 11

Finally, whether your a football fan, or you just enjoy a good party, we have an event for you!  On Sunday, February 11th, beginning at 3pm, we are having a Super Bowl party.  We’ll be showing the game on the big screen, so that’s already fun, but we’ll also set up the terrace with tables and chairs for a gameday potluck.  And to make it more fun, we’ll have a Chili Cook-off, a Cornbread Cook-off, and a Dessert Cook-off.  There are prizes for each of the winners!  Please give Steve Rogers a call for more info.

And that’s it for this week’s update.  Have a great weekend!

With love and blessings to each of you,

Ron Ohst
