February 2, 2024

Hello Grace Vineyard and Friends of Grace.  Welcome to February!  Here’s this week’s Update email.

Last Saturday’s kick-off of the new Homeless/Shower Ministry that will take place on the last Saturday of every month was a huge success.  I was so happy to see many of you join the team bringing love and joy to our neighbors in Oceanside.  I was serving hamburgers and hot dogs and I remember one man coming up to get a burger plate from me and asking, “Am I in heaven?!”  It was a joyful day to be sure.  Ammee and Jay provided great music, there were free haircuts, clothing, some kind of arts table where people were painting, the hot showers of course, and lots of people just enjoying each other and sharing the love of Jesus in a very practical way.  This was a great way for us to put into practice the weeks of training we received in January’s “Jesus says, ‘Go!'” series of messages.  What a blessing that we have Convicted for Christ’s founders (Snake and Michael) in our church family to put on such a great outreach of all of us to be a part of.  This is just one of many opportunities we have right before us.  You made me one very happy pastor!

While I’m talking about Missions, let me remind you to please fill out your Mission’s pledge card for 2024.  Remember, funding for our missions program comes from people like you and me giving special offerings for Missions, above and beyond our normal tithes.  Every January, we fill out pledge cards with the amount we plan on giving  to missions every month for the next year. Our Missions team then takes those pledges and commits to our missionaries for their support for the coming year.  So, if you haven’t already done so, please renew your pledge for 2024 by clicking here: gracevcf.org/pledge24.  If you prefer to fill out this form with paper and pen, you can pick up a brochure when you come into the building on Sundays.  Just drop it off in the offering when you have finished it.  Thank you!

This coming Sunday, after we spend some time ministering to the Lord in worship and basking in His Presence, we will spend 10-15 minutes talking very practically about a number of ways we can take our next steps as a people on Mission.  Last month I began to feel an excitement in the room as we heard more and more stories and teaching about our call to missions both locally and globally, and I’m getting the feeling that a bunch more of us will be stepping out of our comfortable seats and going places locally and around the world to help people know and worship Jesus.  Can you imagine being part of a church community where everybody has a story to tell of their latest adventure on mission with Jesus?!  That’s the kind of community I pray we are becoming!

After that I will bring a short message on “The Incredible Blessing of a Servant Culture”.  Jesus and the apostles brought some profound teaching on the calling and blessing of being a servant.  For example, in Matthew 20:24-28, Jesus said, “…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” He also taught that it is much more blessed to give than to receive.  There’s great blessing in being one who serves others.  In the 12th chapter of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans, he says that we are all compared to the various parts of one body, we belong to each other, and we are to use the gifts God has given us to bless and serve each other. We could keep going for a while reading more scripture that bring out this truth.  I think we’ll be inspired as we learn from the Word of God what blessing is in store for us in growing as disciples of Jesus until the very culture of our community is marked by a heart of service.

Healing From the Inside Out Starts Next Tuesday

We are launching a new session of Healing from the Inside Out for women only, beginning Tuesday, February 6th at the church in the kids area at 7pm.  The goal of this group is to bring healing to the emotional pain that tends to drive our negative life choices.  It provides the opportunity to bring hurtful memories into the light and teaches tools needed to live an emotionally healthy life.  Group time consists of teaching and group processing. There is also some journaling homework.  Cost is $15 and includes a workbook.  Please contact Kim Ohst for more information 760.519.4558.  There will be a sign up in the church lobby, and this will be the last opportunity to sign up.

Collecting Women’s Business-Casual Clothing

On Sundays we have a labelled bin in the lobby to collect women’s nice, business casual clothing.  We plan to do an outreach at a later date with these clothing items. Please call Kim Ohst at 760.519.4558 for more details.

Superbowl Party February 11

The 2024 Super Bowl Weekend is just a week away! Whether you’re a football fan, or you just enjoy a good party, join us on Sunday, February 11th, beginning at 3pm, for our Super Bowl party.  We’ll be showing the game on the big screen and we’ll set up the terrace with tables and chairs for a game day potluck.  And to make it more fun, we’ll have a Chili Cook-off, a Cornbread Cook-off, and a Dessert Cook-off.  There are prizes for each of the winners!  Please give Steve Rogers to sign up for the Cook-Offs and any other info you might need.

Next Saturday will be the 2nd Saturday of the month, and that means it’s time for our monthly Women’s walk and Men’s breakfast.  For the ladies, this month’s walk/hike is at Hosp Grove. We’ll meet at the Hosp Grove playground off Jefferson at 9am.  Please let Kathy Green know if you plan to attend 760.583.1779.  For the men, we’ll meet at 8am at Ty’s Burger house for our usual amazing breakfast and great fellowship.  Our speaker this month is Larry Niggli from “The Man in the Mirror”.

And that does it for this week’s update.  God bless you each abundantly.  I look forward to seeing you Sunday morning at 9:30.  If you have to be away for any reason you can still join us online via zoom with this info:  Zoom Meeting ID  153 112 432, Passcode 684814.
